Time for Medium Format

For those of you that know me, I have been a Nikon user since I was a teenager. Needless to say, I have been waiting (along with all other professional Nikon users) for the next release of the pro level cameras.

Then came the announcement! The D4...woohoo!

Like a kid at Christmas, I couldn't wait to read all about it. But instead of getting the toy I really wanted, I felt like I got a pack of socks.

Now to be fair, I have not had a chance to get my hands on it. But, after reading all of the specs, I am not sure I see a major reason to drop that much coin.

Yes, it has great ISO capabilities and Yes, it has great video. But personally, I have never needed to push past ISO 6400 from my D3 and D700. And even if I did, it was at a highschool football game at night and the images still came out more than acceptable. As for video, I have already dropped plenty of money on a HD rig, and am more than happy with the video results I get from that system.

So after much deliberation, I have decided it is time to begin exploring Medium Format systems. Particularly Hasselblad and Phase. I have used both at one time or another and have always loved the results. I could just never justify the cost of one of those systems. Well, prices are definately dropping. If you think about the price point of a H4D-31 from Hasselblad at an entry point of $13k, it is not really that much more than a high end Nikon or Canon system.

Let the fun begin...I will update regularly on my findings and thoughts.

Stay tuned...
